Eileen Birks

Eileen is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Health and Wellbeing and is a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registered nurse, midwife and health visitor. Eileen teaches on modules relating to child health nursing, patient safety and research methods, and is module lead for the Safeguarding Children and Young People and the newly validated Peri natal mental health modules. Interests lie in promoting children’s growth and nutrition and prior to joining Northumbria University, Eileen was the clinical coordinator of the Newcastle PCT’s Growth and Nutrition Service-focusing on early identification and intervention for children with Growth Faltering. She is a member of the Newcastle Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) trainers’ group and the LSCB Learning and Development Committee. For the past few years Eileen has been the Health Visitor member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) expert growth charts group developing new centile charts and training material for the UK. These charts allow for objective identification of under-nutrition and obesity in children aged 0-18yrs. Eileen was a member of the National Baby Drinks Campaign- a group which lobbied for clearer labelling on sugar content in ‘baby drinks’. She was also part of the research steering group for ‘Baby Express’ ‘Toddler Express’; Age paced newsletters for new parents, Dept. Child Health, Newcastle University.
