In 2010, Healthy Living received ESRC funding to organise a knowledge exchange event on school and community breakfast clubs. The event entitled: School and Community Breakfast Clubs: Breakfast on a Plate… Delivery to Impact, was organised with Kellogg’s and ContinYou and attracted over 180 delegates from various sectors including academia, policy, education, industry and charity.
The event took place over two days beginning with an evening panel event, which allowed delegates to question a panel of experts from industry, charity, nutrition and education about all things breakfast clubs. This was followed the next day by an opening address from Ann Milton, Parliamentary Under Secretary for Public Health and a packed programme of speakers, poster presentations, exhibitions and roundtable discussions. A team of ‘roving reporters’ from a local primary school also carried out interviews with conference delegates, parents, children and breakfast club staff. The team of children received training prior to the event; they designed their interview schedule and gave everyone a real insight into the importance of breakfast and breakfast clubs. They even grilled the experts on their own breakfast habits!

The partnership between Healthy Living and Kellogg’s has continued beyond the conference with the development and implementation of a research-based online training programme to support the development and sustainability of school and community breakfast clubs.
