Across the UK many organisations have introduced holiday clubs to help support low income families during the school holidays. Last summer, Northumbria University’s Healthy Living Lab undertook a snapshot survey into Holiday Meal and Activities in partnership with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on School Food’s Holiday Hunger Task Group.
This summer, working with the APPG on Hunger, we are running a survey to help identify any growth in the number of projects or gaps in provision across the UK. This survey will then help the APPG on Hunger to inform government of the need for a more structured framework of support, policy and funding while at the same time highlighting the issue of child hunger in the UK.
This work will also help contribute to Frank Field’s School Holidays (Meals and Activities) Bill – which would require local authorities to facilitate the delivery of programmes that provide free meals and activities for children during the school holidays – and will receive its first reading on the 5 September.
To help build the case for policy, it is important that we have as strong an evidence base as possible to urge government to bring forward policy. Therefore, we would encourage organisations delivering holiday clubs to complete the survey.
The survey only takes about 5 minutes to complete and the closing deadline is the 18 August. The link to the survey can be found here: https://nupsych.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5ztsLA72IdcALbL
Findings from the survey will be shared and published by the APPG on Hunger in partnership with Northumbria University’s Healthy Living Lab.
